Generate cryptographically secure secret keys for JWT tokens instantly. Choose 32–512 bit strength with quick presets — everything runs client-side, so your keys never leave your browser.
HMAC-based signing algorithms that use a shared secret key. Match your key strength to your algorithm.
HMAC with SHA-256. The most commonly used symmetric algorithm for JWT signing.
Recommended: 256-bit keyHMAC with SHA-384. Stronger hashing for enhanced security requirements.
Recommended: 384-bit keyHMAC with SHA-512. Maximum security for highly sensitive applications.
Recommended: 512-bit keyJSON Web Tokens are the de-facto standard for stateless authentication in modern web apps. But a JWT is only as secure as the secret key used to sign it — a weak or leaked key exposes your entire authentication infrastructure.
A JWT is a compact, URL-safe string with three Base64URL-encoded parts separated by dots:
alg and typ) telling the server how to validate the token. The server hashes the encoded header and payload together with your secret key. If an attacker tampers with the payload (e.g. changing a role from "user" to "admin"), the recalculated signature will no longer match and the token is rejected. The secret key is the only barrier preventing attackers from forging valid tokens.
Weak, predictable keys can be cracked in seconds. Match the key length to your algorithm: HS256 → at least 256 bits (32 bytes), HS384 → 384 bits, HS512 → 512 bits. Always generate keys with a cryptographically secure random generator — never by hand.
| Feature | HS256 (Symmetric) | RS256 (Asymmetric) |
|---|---|---|
| Key Count | One shared secret key | Public + private key pair |
| Signing | Same key signs the token | Private key signs the token |
| Verification | Same key verifies the token | Public key verifies the token |
| Risk Profile | Higher if external parties can verify | Lower — public keys are safe to share |
| Best For | Internal APIs under one control | Third-party APIs and SSO systems |
